Stair treads for every staircase
Modular stair treads, outdoor stair mats and matching landing mats — choose the right tread for your steps and traffic.
What Are Stair Treads?
In construction, a stair tread is the horizontal part of a step that you stand on, and the riser is the vertical face between steps. In safety and flooring terms, stair treads also means the covers, mats and pads fitted on top of each step to add grip, protect the surface and make the edge easier to see. Clean Power manufactures this second kind: non-slip stair treads and stair mats for commercial buildings.
Stairs are one of the highest-risk areas in any building. Wet shoes, polished stone, worn nosings and poor visibility all contribute to slips and missteps. A properly specified stair tread adds traction where the foot lands, scrapes water and grit off soles, and gives each step a consistent, clearly defined surface.
Types of Commercial Stair Treads
| Tread type | Surface and construction | Where it works best | Learn more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modular PVC stair mats | Interlocking PVC base with scraper ribs, drainage openings and optional fiber inserts | Entrance steps, hotels, malls, schools, indoor and outdoor | Stair mats |
| Outdoor stair treads | Weather-resistant PVC or rubber with open drainage and aggressive texture | Exposed exterior steps, rain and snow | Outdoor guide |
| Rubber stair treads | Molded rubber with raised pattern, often with nosing | Transit, schools, industrial stairs | Rubber vs vinyl |
| Vinyl stair treads | Textured PVC with molded nosing, wide color range | Interior offices, healthcare, retail | Rubber vs vinyl |
| Carpet stair treads | Carpet or fiber face on a gripping backing, rectangular or bullnose | Dry interior stairs, hospitality, offices | Carpet guide |
How to Choose Non-Slip Stair Treads
Indoor or outdoor?
This is the first decision. Indoor stair treads can prioritize comfort, color and noise reduction. Exterior treads must drain water, resist UV and stay flexible in cold weather. Entrance steps that are covered but still see wet shoes sit in between, and they benefit most from a scraping, draining modular tread. See our full guide to outdoor stair treads.
Slip resistance and surface texture
Anti-slip stair treads rely on texture, material and drainage working together. Raised ribs and scraper profiles break the water film under a shoe; soft compounds grip better than hard plastics; and drainage stops water from pooling on the step. When comparing slip-resistant stair treads, ask the supplier for slip-resistance test data for the specific model and test condition (wet or dry), not a generic claim. Our slip resistance page explains how mat surfaces are rated.
Traffic level
Airports, stations, malls and schools need heavy-duty treads that scrape grit and resist wear. Offices and hotels can use lighter, more decorative options. For very high traffic, modular treads are easier to maintain because worn sections can be replaced one step at a time.
Step size, nosing and uniformity
Treads must fit each step without overhanging or creating a raised edge. Measure step depth and usable width, and check whether the steps have square or rounded (bullnose) nosings. Every step should end up with the same effective tread depth: the OSHA stairway standard requires uniform riser heights and tread depths between landings, and accessible stairs must meet ADA section 504 for treads and nosings.
Visibility
A contrasting color at the front of each step helps people judge the edge, especially when descending. Black stair treads with a lighter nosing strip, or bright treads on gray stone, improve step definition without changing the architecture.
Installation method
Treads can be glued, taped, mechanically fixed or interlocked. The right method depends on the step material and whether treads will be lifted for cleaning. Our stair tread installation guide explains every option.

Stair Treads, Risers and Landing Mats
People searching for stair treads and risers are often renovating the structure of a staircase. For safety upgrades, the riser usually stays as it is, and the focus is on the tread surface, the nosing and the landing. Adding a matching landing mat at the top or bottom of the stairs catches the water and debris the treads remove, so the whole entrance works as one system. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best material for non-slip stair treads?
For commercial and exterior steps, textured rubber or modular PVC with drainage gives the most reliable grip. Carpet treads suit dry interior stairs, and vinyl works well indoors when color and budget matter.
What is the difference between stair treads and stair mats?
The terms overlap. Stair treads usually means pads or covers sized to one step, while stair mats often refers to modular matting that can cover steps and landings. Clean Power supplies both.
Can stair treads be used outdoors?
Yes, if they are made for exterior use: weather-resistant materials, drainage and firm fixing. Carpet and peel-and-stick treads are generally not suitable outside.
Do you supply stair treads to distributors?
Yes. We work with distributors, wholesalers and contractors worldwide and offer OEM packaging, custom sizes and flexible order quantities.
