What Do Entrance Mats Do?
Most of the dirt and moisture inside a building arrives on shoes. Entrance mats, also called walk-off mats or entryway mats, are placed at doorways to remove that dirt and water before it spreads across floors. A good entrance mat does three jobs:
- Scraping: coarse textures knock mud, grit and snow off soles.
- Wiping and absorbing: fiber surfaces dry shoes and hold water and fine dust in the pile.
- Safety: a stable, non-slip mat reduces slips on wet entrance floors.
Keeping walking surfaces clean and, as far as possible, dry is also a basic workplace duty under OSHA’s walking-working surfaces standard, and entrance matting is one of the simplest ways to meet it.
Types of Entrance Mats
| Type | Surface | Where to place it |
|---|---|---|
| Scraper mats | Spiral grid, rubber fingers, ribbed PVC or tire-pattern textures | Outside the door or first zone of the entrance |
| Scraper-wiper mats | Coarse and fine fibers combined | Vestibules and covered entrances |
| Wiper and absorbent mats | Nylon, polypropylene, microfiber or cotton pile | Inside the door, where shoes are dried |
| Modular entrance mats | Interlocking tiles with brush, carpet or scraper surfaces | Large, recessed or irregular entrances |
| Aluminum entrance systems | Aluminum profiles with rubber, carpet or brush inserts | Permanent, high-traffic main entrances |
| Logo entrance mats | Printed or inlaid designs on nylon, microfiber or polypropylene | Branded entrances, lobbies, showrooms |
Most buildings combine several of these in sequence. Our guide to entrance matting systems explains how to plan scraper, transition and wiper zones for a complete entrance.
Indoor vs Outdoor Entrance Mats
Outdoor entrance mats need open, draining structures and UV- and weather-resistant materials such as PVC, rubber or aluminum, so rain and snow pass through rather than pooling. Indoor entrance mats focus on wiping and absorbing, using dense nylon or polypropylene fibers on non-slip PVC or rubber backings. Browse our outdoor entrance mats and indoor entrance mats.
How to Choose Commercial Entrance Mats
1. Size for enough steps
A mat that is too short does little. Each foot needs to land on the mat several times: the longer the matting zone, the more dirt and water it removes. Size the mat to the full width of the doorway and give it enough length for several steps on each surface type. Our buyer’s guide to commercial door mats for high-traffic business entrances explains sizing and matting zones in more detail.
2. Match the surface to the weather
In wet or snowy climates, put an aggressive scraper outside and a highly absorbent wiper inside. In dry, dusty regions, dense fibers that trap fine dust matter more.
3. Consider traffic volume
Airports, malls and office towers need heavy-duty nylon, modular or aluminum floor mats. Smaller shops and secondary doors can use polypropylene or cotton mats. Compare fibers in our nylon and polypropylene material guides.
4. Check backing and edges
Non-slip PVC or rubber backings keep mats in place, and beveled or bound edges reduce trip hazards. In the United States, carpet-type floor surfaces on accessible routes should follow the ADA floor surface requirements for pile height and secured edges.
5. Plan for branding
The entrance is the first thing visitors see. Printed and inlaid custom logo mats combine dirt control with brand presence for hotels, retail and corporate lobbies.
Entrance Mats by Building Type
- Offices: wiper mats that suit professional lobbies. See office solutions.
- Hotels: branded lobby mats and recessed systems. See hotel solutions.
- Retail: hard-wearing mats that protect polished floors. See retail solutions.
- Schools: heavy-duty mats for concentrated traffic. Read our guide to entrance mats for schools.
- Entrance steps: matching non-slip stair treads for steps leading to the door.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Vacuum wiper mats daily in busy periods, lift scraper and modular mats to clear dirt underneath, and deep-clean or rotate mats regularly. A saturated mat stops working, so plan spare mats for wet seasons. See how to maintain and clean commercial floor mats and learn how entrance mats reduce cleaning costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a walk-off mat?
A walk-off mat is another name for an entrance mat: a mat placed at a doorway so people walk dirt and moisture off their shoes before entering.
How long should an entrance mat be?
Long enough for several steps on each mat type. High-traffic buildings usually combine an outdoor scraper, an indoor wiper and sometimes a transition mat to create a longer matting zone.
Should I use one mat or several?
For busy entrances, several. A scraper outside and a wiper inside remove far more dirt than a single mat.
Can entrance mats be customized?
Yes. We produce entrance mats in custom sizes, colors, shapes and logo designs for businesses and distributors.
